Whine and wine

Yesterday Hubs and I had dinner with my family at my parents' house. I was in a decent enough mood, but I had one of those moments when I really felt out of place. Four of my nieces and nephews were running around the backyard, with my sister and brother leading a conversation about pregnancy and parenthood. Meanwhile Hubs and I were sitting 10 feet away looking at each other with nothing to contribute and a burning desire to GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE. Sigh... Score another point for infertility - driving wedges between family members since 830 B.C.

Not helping matters: Today is CD22 (about 8DPO), and I just know AF will be visiting this weekend. I really wasn't holding out much hope for this C, but I'm bummed. Very bummed. Ugh... This is still so damn hard.

Hubs and I had a very nice long weekend, though. Our trip to wine country was perfect, and we had a great time wine tasting on Friday. We booked a shuttle and wound up hitting it off with two other couples in our van, so we spent most of the day with them. We also got to spend some time with one of Hubs's good friends and his girlfriend on Thursday evening. And guess what? No one talked about kids or babies the whole trip. We got back early Saturday afternoon and spent most of the weekend just hanging out at home. It was nice and relaxing.

Seeing as we're now completely broke, it's time to quit having fun and get back to work on the house. We still (always!) have a ton to do, so that will be the focus of our weekends for the next... however long. But I'm excited to get stuff done, our little bungalow will look so much more finished and homey.

Almost time for acupuncture. Fingers crossed it does the trick and pulls me out of my funk today.

Friday fun: The answer to the ultimate IF question

I had a super fun post detailing the week that led up to my miscarriage, but after I wrote most of it I broke down in tears at my desk and decided to finish it another time. Lucky for you. :)

I'm trying to get back into commenting more regularly on everyone's blogs, and was reading Lookingforaplussign's most recent post about her bummer of an IVF consult this morning. (Go over and give her some encouragement and hugs if you would, please.) Something she said reminded me of something my acupuncturist told me this week, which I shared with CJ and which I am going to share with you right now in even more detail. Prepare to be blown away.

So. The ultimate IF question: Why is it that people who can't handle/support children can have them at will, while so many who can support them are infertile? (A la "Idiocracy.")

The comment from my acupuncturist that led me to the answer to the ultimate IF question: Human beings are not very good breeders. This is because we're predators and at the top of the food chain. Most predators are the same way - consider, for example, bears as opposed to mice. Bears only have a couple of cubs every few years or whatever, compared to mice, who might have 10 in a litter, and several litters per year. But bears eat a lot more than mice do, and if they were as prolific as mice they would soon outnumber their prey and die out.

Humans are even farther up the food chain so it follows that we're even poorer breeders than other predators (regardless of whether you eat other animals, you're still one of us). Why are we so far up the food chain? Technically we could be eaten by other animals (and sometimes are), but we have the intellectual capacity to better protect ourselves, not to mention to create and use tools that help us eat other less fortunate species.

If less intelligent species are lower on the food chain than smarter ones, it would follow that those humans on the lower end of the intelligence scale would also be lower on the food chain, and therefore more prolific than more intelligent humans, right? I mean, you wouldn't expect a 15 year old crack addict to be able to protect herself from a bear attack, would you? She needs to be able to procreate in order to protect her "sub-species," because let's face it, she isn't going to last too long in the wild. So she'll probably end up having 6-8 children to protect her lineage. Whereas someone with more intelligence would be more likely to figure out a way to survive a bear attack (or even defeat the bear), hence ensuring a longer lifespan, and reducing the need for multiple offspring to perpetuate their sub-species.

You see where I'm going with this. Clearly, since Infertiles are the least likely to be able to procreate with ease, it follows that there must be less need for us to procreate, meaning we are at the very, very top of the food chain and therefore (as we already knew) on the highest end of the intelligence scale.

So there you go. While it totally sucks that we have a harder time procreating, at least we know we're more likely to survive a bear attack.

And to any Fertile readers out there, I mean no disrespect to you! Since you are obviously as high on the intelligence scale as us Infertiles (you hang out with the likes of me, after all), I can only conclude that you're some kind of freak of nature for being able to procreate, when the laws of nature clearly dictate that you should be infertile too! ;)

Disclaimer: This post was in no way meant to be serious, so please don't take offense and start arguing with my indisputable facts. Let us poor barren bitches have our fun where we can get it.

I made it!

Well I made it through A's bachelorette extravaganza! It actually wasn't too bad, I mean as far as being tired. It seemed to all hit me yesterday and I took a two hour nap shortly after getting home. Mmm... I could go for a nap right now too!

We stayed out late both nights, and yeah I was tired, but not falling over from exhaustion or anything. It was actually sort of interesting to be sober at the clubs and bars, and it was fun to people-watch. There was plenty of creeper-dodging going on too! A guy even approached me and tried to get me to dance with him, but luckily I am a master at deterring men. He was a bit creepy himself - it had to be close to 100 degrees inside the club and he was wearing a scarf, which was the first red flag. I sort of accidentally brushed him off me and onto another girl in our group, and I guess he was saying all kinds of crazy things to her like, "I love to love, do you like to love? Who do you like to love?" Freakin' weirdo. The second night we went to a more mellow bar (the first night was a too-cool-for-school type of club) with a lot more normal people, and that was more our style!

I did end up telling A my news over the weekend, and I'm glad I did. She was so happy and excited that she started crying, and every time we had a moment alone she'd ask questions and tell me how excited she was for me. It was nice. :) I think I'll tell my three other close friends sometime after my appointment on Thursday, but before my little birthday shindig on Saturday. I purposely only invited family and my four closest friends so that we wouldn't have to worry about keeping it a secret.

So all in all it was a good weekend. Except on Sunday I managed to throw out my back by hugging someone. Seriously?? How does that even happen?? Luckily I was able to get into my chiro on a walk-in this morning so hopefully I will be pain-free by the weekend. I start my vacation this Thursday and I absolutely cannot wait! Hubs has Thursday off so he can come along to my OB appt and then hopefully spend the day celebrating with me. And Friday I turn 30. Well, whatever! Nerdy Thirty, here I come!

Ear cancer and bar naps

I prefer not to be subjected to the vocal stylings of one Ms. Tina Turner. I know she's the Queen of Rock or whatever and most everyone loves her. But her voice sounds like sandpaper to me. Not pretty!

Every Friday morning the Hag blasts music from one of her more obscure albums (okay, I don't know if it's actually obscure, but I'd never heard any of these songs until I started working here) in an effort to spread her pre-weekend cheer. Well, almost every Friday. When her office is silent you know she's in a mood, and when she's in a mood she usually finds something to hassle me about. So as much as I can't stand Tina Turner, life is always better around the office on those Fridays when she's spewing her raspy lyrics than not!

So today I'm grateful for the ear cancer I've just been given, and giving an extra high-five to the corporate gods that the Hag is in jeans, which means she will likely be spending much of the day at another location! Fingers crossed! All in all, today's shaping up to be a decent day.

Bonus! I'm leaving work early to meet the girls and carpool down to L.A. for A's bachelorette weekend extravaganza! I am very nearly finished packing and I only have to pick up a couple things on my way home (procrastination is my middle name). I'm looking forward to spending most of the day tomorrow relaxing on the beach and soaking up some sun, and will somehow get through tonight's and tomorrow night's debauchery without falling asleep on the bar. I hope.

Maybe I'll luck out and one of the girls will be a lightweight and have to be taken back to the hotel early :)

TGIF

Well hello there, fine folks! I am so happy it's Friday, I'm ready for a nice, relaxing weekend. What will I be doing, you ask? (You did, I heard you!) Well tomorrow morning I'll be heading to the farmers market to pick up supplies for the first week of my new diet. That means I don't get to sleep in like I'd prefer, but that's life. I can always nap while I lay out in the afternoon. Speaking of which, my tan is coming along nicely, albeit slowly since I have to wear sunscreen or I'll inevitably burn. I'm certainly not tan, but I'm a good two shades darker than when I started, and I look much healthier with a little color!

What I'm really excited about this weekend is the annual Greek Festival nearby! How I love Greek food, and how rarely I get to eat authentic Greek food! I'm going to stuff my face with loukaniko, dolmades, spanokopeta and baklava with ice cream. Oh I'm practically shaking with excitement just thinking about it. It'll be my last she-bang before starting the diet on Monday and I'm going to take full advantage. Oh yeah, and I'll probably take in some cultural experiences like watching the traditional dancing or something while I'm there too (seriously though, I'm going for the FOOD!).

I started back on the Wii Fit this week, putting in a solid 35-40 minutes on both Monday and Tuesday. Of course I was so sore on Wednesday and Thursday that I had to take a break, but I'll be back on the balance board tonight. It's amazing how hard it kicks my butt! Or maybe it's just evidence of how out of shape I am...

I'm coming up on the end of the 2ww, and for once I haven't been obsessing over it. I honestly think that's thanks to the C+B daily meditations, which I've been a lot better about doing this C than I was the last. It's almost like I'm learning to turn the worrying off, or at least turn it down, when it comes to TTC and IF. It's quite nice. Oh yeah, I broached the subject with my parents on Wednesday, and they are open to talking more about money for treatments. My dad wants me to gather as much pricing info as I can first, but looks like The Talk will be happening pretty soon. Keep your fingers crossed for me please!

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone!

Stuck!

Last night I finally got to the good part of the fertility book I recently bought - the part that breaks down the 5 fertility types, based on traditional Chinese medicine. I had to muddle through the first 100+ pages of information which detail various lifestyle changes and dietary supplements before I got there. Not to say that those 100+ pages weren't interesting, they really were, but I was anxious to get to the meat! I'm being good though, and am reading through the whole thing.

So the first two fertility types were "Tired" and "Dry." I found I have several of the signs for "Tired," but it still didn't quite click, so I forged onward. As soon as I started on the third type, "Stuck," I actually started getting butterflies because it was so familiar. I kept thinking, "This is me!" At the end of each section is a checklist of symptoms, and I must have marked off 90% of them for "Stuck". I was bummed I had to stop reading after that because we had to leave for dinner at hubs's parents', but I can't wait to read more tonight! (You know you're infertile when the highlight of your Friday night is reading a book called "Making Babies.") The book outlines what kinds of lifestyle changes to make and supplements to take based on your fertility type, and I think that's next. Also, my accu wants to go over it with me next time I come in (next week), so I'm getting cautiously excited. We'll see if this helps!

Dinner at the in-law's was nice last night. However, the whole point of us going over there was to return all the stuff I borrowed for the two bridal showers, and we completely forgot all of it! There's a ton of stuff, and they actually need some of it for the camping trip they're going on next week. Oops! Guess hubs will be making another trip over there tonight!

This weekend is going to be pretty busy. Tomorrow we're riding our bikes from our house on the east end of town to our friends' house on the west side. We'll then walk ourselves on over to the highly-anticipated Sa.lute Beer Festival at State Beach! (I must sound like such a lush with all my talk of beer festivals and wine tasting and martinis, but how could I pass up beer tasting at the beach??) A bunch of our friends are going as well, so it should be a good time. I just have to make sure I pace myself and drink tons of water because Sunday morning we're having breakfast with hubs's family for Father's Day, and most likely dinner at my parents' house too. I hope I get to take a nap in there somewhere!

Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend, everyone :)

On tantrums and bridal showers

Thank you Rain and Daisy, for your thoughtful responses to my last post about the "Tar.get Tantrum." I do get that tantrums are probably much harder for the parents than the surrounding public, and I didn't mean to come off like I blame all parents for all their children's bad behavior. Mostly I just wanted to vent.

This will probably make me sound like a terrible person, but I do think there are some parents that need to do more to address/correct their children's bad behavior in public. In this particular case, the child was probably just shy of 2 years old, so it's not like you could blame him. What got me was that both of the parents were there and he was the only child with them. One of them could have taken him outside until he calmed down. Or they could have picked up the pace and tried to finish up their shopping instead of leisurely meandering around the store as they were. Twenty minutes is a long time to let a child scream in public. Maybe there was some reason beyond what was apparent that they chose not to do anything, and that's anyone's guess. What it looked like to me was two parents choosing to ignore their child's behavior rather than deal with it. But as we know, I'm a pessimist so of course I'm going to jump to that conclusion! I'm sure most of you ladies are a lot more generous than I am in that respect. :)

Now, onto the weekend. What a whirlwind - throwing two bridal showers in 24 hours! Both of them turned out beautifully, naturally! T's was Tuscan-themed, held at her mom's home late Saturday afternoon/evening. We had tons of pasta, bread, and wine, the tables and flowers were gorgeous, the games were fun, and T was thrilled. It was a great, if exhausting, day. And T was so sweet, she gave me a set of really nice outdoor wine glasses (i.e. plastic) as a thank-you for throwing the shower. I was just saying how I needed some, since we do most of our entertaining outside, so I LOVE them!

A's shower was Asian-themed (and no, I didn't realize until just now that "T is for Tuscan" and "A is for Asian" LOL), and it took place in my backyard Sunday afternoon. A works for a caterer and one of the other bridesmaids is an event planner for a hotel, so everything looked really professional - matching tables and linens, fancy matching folding chairs, chaffing dishes for all the food (veggie stir-fry, egg rolls and pot stickers, with red velvet cake and mochi ice cream for dessert), etc. My backyard has never looked so nice! And the decorations were perfect. We had Tibetan prayer flags at the gate, a cute "lounge" area, paper lanterns, cherry blossoms, and lots of red! I know I know, "PICTURES!" I'll post them when I get them all loaded up onto my computer. Promise!

Well, that was pretty much my whole weekend - cooking, cleaning, loading, unloading, setting up, tearing down, and running around in heels... Hubs and I did also stop by my parents' house to take photos in our African garb last night. (My parents are sending the pics to their friends in Cameroon.) I think we looked pretty cute! I'll post those too when I get them.

Last and least, today is CD5, and unless she's teasing me, I think AF is already on her way out. That's probably thanks to the herbs from my acu, because my whole life AF has lasted 7 solid days. Last month was more like 6 days, and now 5? Nice! I'm not too enthusiastic about TTC this C though. I kind of figure, with a 0.1% chance of getting pregnant, why bother? On the other hand, if we don't try I'll kick myself later, so I'm sure we will regardless. At any rate, all I'm interested in right now is a nice long nap. If only I didn't have to wait until I got home!

Gender-guessing, road blocks, and adoption

(Possible trigs) You will be relieved to know that my multi-year streak of being completely wrong when guessing baby gender still goes unbroken! My "strong" feeling that my brother and SIL are having a boy must have just been gas because they found out yesterday that it's a girl! And ya know, now that they say that, I can totally see my brother with two little girls. I bet that's what I was really thinking all along.

I know most of us have had this thought before, but it's been bugging me lately for some reason. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that "normal" couples can get pregnant just by having sex. While my brother and SIL's first baby was a surprise, they planned their current pregnancy. Guess how long it took them to conceive. Yep, one month. It blows my mind. I can't even imagine what it would be like to want to get pregnant and to know you can pretty much whenever you feel like it. I have this image that my reproductive tract is like an old and busted single-lane street with a road block set up. No detours, the road is just closed and the spermies have to turn around and go back. The reproductive tracts of fertile women must be like the autobahn - smooth and straight to allow the sperm to reach maximum speed and fulfill their purpose. I certainly hope mine's at least under construction and that the road block comes down eventually.

Anyway, enough about road construction. Last night hubs, my friend B and I brought back bowling night! It was really fun, even though it was just the three of us. At one point B told me about her coworker's sister, who is 19 and KU and wants to put the baby up for adoption. I automatically told her I want it, and to my great surprise hubs didn't say no (right away). We truly aren't ready for adoption quite yet, but the way the conversation went made me more confident that when the time comes, hubs will be just as ready as me.

And now, I am ready for the weekend!!! But first I have to make it through today. I'm already irritated which makes me think PMS is creeping in (AF is due Tuesday, just in time for my anniversary), and Fridays tend to be a PITA around here. So I'm sending up a quick prayer that we all have a nice easy Friday to transition us into the weekend!

5.05.2010

1ww

Well, today is CD22 and hubs and I BDed every other day from CD7-19. We fell off the wagon last night, but I'm pretty sure we're out of the "window" anyway. I'm pretty proud of us for keeping it up! Next month I'm going back to OPKing; it would be nice to know if the acu is helping me with stronger Os or something. I miss seeing those nice dark test lines. There was something very satisfying about seeing them, like at least I knew something was working properly! And if I can't get two lines on an HPT, well dammit I better at least see two on an OPK!

And now... I wait... I was doing pretty well not thinking about the 2ww until this very moment...

By the way, turns out we're heading up to the Central Coast for our anniversary after all. Hubs talked to his friend J, who said it would be great if we came and stayed in their spare bedroom for 2 nights! It'll be fun, in addition to wine tasting we can spend some time with our friends who we don't get to see very often. Plus they have a new tiny kitten to play with! And I am a sucker for tiny kittens!!

And that's all she wrote. And by she, I mean me. And by "all," I mean for today. :)

My morning, the weekend, and unconditional surrender

Atticus is on my sh*t list today. (Yeah, Lent is over and I'm already back to my old bad habits and sailor mouth. But I have cut back a lot on my swearing, overall.) He likes to watch me iron, something about the back and forth motion and the cord wiggling around simply fascinates him. He'll sit on this little cabinet right next to the ironing board and just stare.

And sometimes, get really wound up.

And his pupils get dialated.

And his tail starts flipping around all crazy-like.

Normally I'm able to stop him and kick him out of the room before any of us get hurt, but not today. Today my hand was right in front of him while he was getting agitated, so he sank his claws into it! I'm now the proud owner of a bright red, bleeding, 2 and a half inch scratch from my pinky almost to my wrist. (I know it's 2.5 inches because I'm a dork and I measured. And if you don't think 2.5 inches is a long scratch, then check your ruler, cuz it is!)

Owiiiiie!

So I'm in a bad mood today. I was 10 minute late to work, I feel AF heading my direction, and the back of my hand stings! Boo-hoo.

But it's Friday, and I will somehow muddle through.

In addition to the wedding this weekend (for which I still have no idea what to wear), we're also celebrating my mom's 60th birthday on Sunday. My brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews and me and hubs are all heading to my parents' house for lunch, catered by our favorite Mexican restaurant. Yum! And tonight hubs and I may be heading downtown to watch a friend's band play (R, of the engaged couple A&R). I swear he's going to be famous one day, he's an amazing musician. Should be fun.

Final thought: I'm going to try not to think about this C anymore. It's all fine and dandy to be optimistic and hopeful the first 3 weeks of my cycle, but that's about all I can muster! I only have about one cup left of my optimism tea and I don't think it's gonna do the trick today. So bring it on AF, I surrender.

The weekend

Okay, so first off, I have a beef with we.athe.r.com. Sure, this weekend was warm and sunny, just like they predicted, but they neglected to mention the freakin' gale-force winds on Saturday! I'm talking 40+ mph gusts. What we coastal southern Californians refer to as the "Santa Ana's" - strong, hot winds that come from from over the mountains to the east. Have you seen the movie "The Ho.lid.ay?" There's a scene where Jack Black is telling Kate Winslet about how romantic and magical the Santa Ana winds are. Well let me tell you something: he's full of crap. I'd like him to explain what's so magical about 40 mph, 80 degree wind drying out your eyes and skin, blowing dirt and debris everywhere, and giving everything an electrical charge. My hair and clothes are staticky and every time I touch ANYTHING made of metal I get shocked. Yeah, super romantic. Idiot.

I don't much care for the Santa Ana's.

But they did prevent me from having to do yard work on Saturday. Instead, hubs and I ran some errands and then relaxed indoors. The winds died down enough for us to enjoy a great party in the park for my engaged friends A&R on Sunday, though. We had a nice, relaxing time, and we even got to use the quick-shade, card table and cooler that hubs's parents got us for Christmas for the first time. (They always give us way too much, but it's always super handy stuff!) We sprawled out on a blanket and just ate and chatted and chilled all afternoon. I even got a little sun!

I took some photos of my colorful soda "centerpieces," but of course haven't uploaded them yet. I'll try to remember to do that tonight. They came out really cute - I just got three of these little galvanized steel flower planters, lined up 4 sodas in each, and threw some ice on them. Hubs and I went to this local retro soda and candy shop (called Roc.ket Fi.zz) to get 12 different flavored and colored sodas in glass bottles. They had everything there, from plain old Coke and Pepsi to vintage style soft drinks in every imaginable flavor including pineapple, cherry-cream, and fizzy blueberry lemonade. Plus, they had every kind of candy bar you've ever heard of. Hubs and I each got one that we'd never tried before - I had a Zagnut and it was SO GOOD! Why don't they sell them everywhere anymore?? Hubs got a Clark bar, which was a lot like a Butterfinger. Yummy! I love old-fashionedy stuff like that, so I had a great time! (Like a kid in a candy shop?) It makes me REALLY wish I had kids to plan parties for, but I'm definitely going to go back for supplies for my next party anyway! Or maybe just next time I'm really, really PMSed.

So yep, it was a fun, relaxing weekend, if riddled with crap in my eyes and skin so dry I could hardly move my fingers. Which brings me to today: CD16. I haven't seen any more EWCM since that little bit last week; in fact I've been a tad dry lately, probably from the Clomid. Good thing I stocked up on PreSeed! Hubs and I are still DTD every other day and then some. He's being a real trooper...or maybe more of a drill sergeant! We BDed on Saturday, and I was so tired last night from yesterday's festivities that I was about to just head off to bed early. But then hubs said, "Aren't we supposed to go all out since you're on Clomid?" And then we had a rockin' BD session. LOL I told him we made a baby with that one! Sigh... I can only hope! Anyway, onward. I have a new, huge, complicated, boring project I should be working on right now. Might as well get started.

Happy Monday everyone!

Debauchery

This weekend was really fun.

And I am really exhausted.

I'm such a terrible storyteller, and I am so tired, that I'm not sure I can convey the craziness and fun of this bachelorette party. But here are some key points:

1. I (along with almost everyone else - about 20 girls) drank too much on Friday night even though I promised myself I wouldn't. But there were shots. SHOTS! You have to do shots at a bachelorette party!

2. There were a couple instances of girls sprawled out on floor of the hotel hallways. And one instance of a lacrosse player on our floor having to carry a girl to her room. Neither occasion involved me, in case you were wondering. ;)

3. There was one instance of hotel security being called on some members of our party. I guess they got a little rowdy coming back from the bars! The bride and another girl attempted to hide from them in the maid's closet and were quite easily found.

4. I slept a total of 4 hours Friday night and woke up feeling 100% wretched. I had to rally because Saturday was wine tasting day. Did "hair of the dog" for the first time in my life and it really works! But I don't want to ever have to do it again!

5. Wine tasting was great! We visited 4 wineries and I joined one club. The last winery had a bunch of wigs and hats to play with while we tasted. Unfortunately the limo with karaoke was out of commission so we had to make due with singing along to CD's. But our limo was still pretty freakin' awesome, and bigger than the one they'd originally booked. (It was one of those SUV ones.)

6. I really got out of my shell and had a great time! Even though I roomed with BOTH of the pg ladies. Yep, there were 2. But it worked out because I went to bed early on Saturday night and I am 100% sure I was in the quietest room. And although one of them got pg the first month of trying, the other had struggled with IF, so I didn't take it too hard.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately after the debauchery I participated in this weekend, AF showed up a day early yesterday, and with a vengeance! I am going to have to pay more attention to my C's as a whole. I didn't appear to have Oed this C, but had a ton of EWCM, and now AF is kicking my butt. I wonder what's up with that?

Now to power through the rest of this day... or at least try to stay awake for the next 5 hours...

3.11.2010

Ants in my pants

In about one hour, my weekend will have arrived! Provided no crazy issues pop up between now and then...

Why do I get a three day weekend, you ask? Because I'm leaving tomorrow for my friend S's bachelorette weekend wine tasting extravaganza! S is the fiancee of one of hubs's friends, so there are going to be a lot of ladies there from that group. Which means there's a bit of a nervous tinge to my excitement. I do consider those ladies to be my friends too, but I'm not particularly close with any of them. We get together as a group about once a month for girls' night, but I don't call them up to chat or go shopping with them or anything like that. BUT!! In my effort to become a more outgoing, friendly person, I am determined to push my shyness aside and have a GREAT time this weekend!

Hmm... not much else to say at the moment. I'm all wound up so I can't even be clever, how sad is that? I'm just sitting here all antsy, checking the clock every 2 minutes and waiting for it to be 4:30 already!

Have a great weekend!

March (and April, May, June, July & August) Madness

As you're aware (or at least, as I've mentioned before, since it would be rather presumptuous of me to expect you to remember every minute detail that I post about my life), I'm a bridesmaid in 2 upcoming weddings, both of which are in August, 2 weeks apart.

In case you didn't know, that means both of these weddings are a mere 5 months away.

It's funny, when one is asked to be a bridesmaid in one wedding, one realizes that there are certain obligations that go along with the honor - the dress, the hair, the parties, the gifts - and all of these obligations require preparation, planning and of course, money. But when one is asked, one thinks of all of these things as taking place in the fuzzy, abstract future. And one is apt to think one will have plenty of time to "save up" for these expenses.

When one is asked to be a bridesmaid in a second wedding, one is so excited that one was asked once again (should I knock it off with the "ones" now? Gotcha, will do) - Ahem - I was (and still am) so excited and honored to be asked, that, although I did realize my expenditures will now be doubled, as will the fullness of my schedule in the coming months, I was willing, even eager, to overlook the obvious stress that being in two weddings, two weeks apart, will doubtless create.

Well, the madness has officially begun and the blinders are OFF. Of course I'm still just as happy to be a part of both weddings, only now I'm a bit stressed too. (Did I mention that between now and August we're also invited to three other weddings and a Bat Mitzvah? Or that almost every member of my local family, including myself, will be celebrating birthdays too?) I'm going to have to get myself a planner because I have a feeling the next few months are going to be pure, uncut Colombian insanity, and with my shoddy memory I'm likely to forget to attend a bridal shower or rehearsal dinner or to wish my husband a happy anniversary or something.

In fact, I think I might just pick one up on my lunch break. And right after that I'll be using office hours to find a very inexpensive location to host an engagement party in 3 weeks... That's totally doable, right??

Work and the week and stuff

The hubs landed a second interview! Please keep everything crossed that it goes well next week. His friend T works for this company and he's really pulling for him to get hired. He said there are 4 candidates left, so he's not exactly a shoe-in, but they started with 8, so that's not too shabby either. It would be beyond wonderful if he gets hired for this position - more pay, no more working in a branch, casual environment. Seems like a really good place to work, and a much better fit for him.

As far as my work is going... The Hag has decided to stop being haggy (for now, that is - she could change her mind again this afternoon), but my new attitude towards her is "professional and polite, not friendly." I just can't wait until this economy turns back around and I can try to find a job I really like. That probably won't happen for another year or so, but I can hope! Until then, this one pays the bills and I should be grateful for that. At least if the Hag is off my case that's one less thing to fret over.

Well, tonight is my last night with hubs until Sunday. He's leaving tomorrow for his friend's bachelor party trip. I hate when he's gone, but at least with a deadbolt on the front door I'll feel a lot safer alone than last time. I also bring the gun out and keep it nearby at night. What? I said I don't like being alone!

I try to plan as many activities as possible whenever hubs is out of town. This time I only have a couple things going on - girls' night in at my place on Friday, and an event that hubs's uncle is putting on on Saturday night. Girls' night should be fun, I already have more people planning on coming than I expected, and now I have to figure out how to fit everyone into my tiny house! I think I'll do Wii games in the living room, and board games in the kitchen, then movies later on for those planning on staying the night. Hopefully it's a fun time for everyone :)

And hopefully this cold doesn't get any worse or there might not be a girls' night! So far so good, I'm downing my vitamins like they're going out of style and I feel okay. It's mostly just a nuisance at this point. Not much else I can do anyway.

Alrighty, it's obvious I'm just bored today and I'm only delaying the inevitable. I should probably get some work done!

The dude abides

Hubs and I have decided that henceforth, Thursday night is officially Bowling Night. One might assume that since we have committed so enthusiastically to Bowling Night that we are avid bowlers, perhaps members of a league who own our own shoes and monogrammed balls. That assumption, however, would be completely wrong. In fact, I kind of suck at it, and Aaron is about average. But we have fond memories from way back in our early days of dating, of partaking in $2 a game bowling night at the slightly seedier of the two alleys in town. And in our effort to come out of IF-induced hibernation (at least on my part), we thought it was a good idea to create a fun, active routine. And they still do $2 night, so my frugal sensibilities tell me to go for it.

So last night we met up with two other couples at the ol' Bowling Center and played a couple games. As usual I did terrible on the first game, but I almost beat everyone on the second. I scored 123 and then one of our friends came out from behind and beat me by ONE stinkin' point! Oh well! I'm still proud of me for breaking 100!

Of course as we played we'd quote The Bi.g Le.bo.wsk.i, and at one point someone bought everyone a round of White Russians. YUMMY! I hadn't had one since my 21st birthday, when my big brother took me out and bought me one of just about everything, and I forgot how good they are! We decided that we'll order a round of them every Bowling Night, in honor of the Dude.

Hmm... I guess this begs the question: What do you do to keep your mind off IF?

Game night!

I'm so glad I asked everyone for their appetizer ideas. Now I have a few new tricks up my sleeve for the future, thanks ladies! I ended up using MotherHen's suggestion of a package of cream cheese with salsa and shrimp on top, minus the shrimp since SIL is a vegetarian, and served it with tortilla chips. YUM! I completely forgot that my mom uses the same "recipe" sometimes too (also without shrimp; I will definitely be trying it your way sometime, A), so thanks for the reminder. :) It's definitely a crowd-pleaser!

Hubs, both of my brothers, SIL and little niecey all had a great time last night. So much so that we decided to do "family game night" every week from now on! Just like the cheesy Hasbro commercials, but way cooler since we're so awesome of course. We played Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart on the Wii, and I don't mind tooting my own horn - I friggin' rocked the socks off of Mario Kart. With the exception of the first one (I was still getting the hang of the controllers) I won every race. I usually suck at video games, but like I said, Mario Kart has always been my favorite! My driver of choice was Luigi, but I cracked up at Allison's comment about how Princess Peach flashes her undies on the jumps! I'm going to have to check that out! ...Wow, how pervy did that sound?

After game night hubs and I managed to squeeze in a BD sesh, and not a moment too soon! I did see some EWCM yesterday as anticipated, so I'm thinking last night was probably our best shot for this C. We'll keep on it for a few more days just in case though. I've gotten my hopefulness down to the "cautiously optimistic" level, and am just trying not to think about it too much. So far so good, but we'll see what happens when the 2ww really kicks in! I think I'm gonna need to pick up a new sewing project... new covers for the throw pillows perhaps?

Just some stuff

I know it's old news to everyone else, but I finally saw Up for the first time last night. Oh. My. Gosh. I cried like 4 or 5 times throughout the movie, not just that part near the beginning. I was actually so emotional that I was unable to "perform" last night! Granted it was also past my bedtime when we finished the movie. Oops... So much for every day this week! I haven't noticed any EWCM yet, but I have a feeling it will be here today, so tonight is a MUST. No sadness or stress allowed today!

After work tonight hubs and I are reconnecting with some more old friends - my older brother and SIL! They got married 5 months after hubs and I, and the four of us would hang out all the time during our respective engagements. SIL got pregnant right after their wedding and I got a temp job at the wine club where she worked after I got laid off, so we still hung out quite a bit until my niece was born. Of course once she arrived that changed things and we don't see each other nearly as much anymore, which is a shame! So tonight we are, naturally, playing Wii at their house. Since we have one now we're bringing our remotes over so that we can all four play Mario Kart, which is one of my FAVORITE games ever. Should be some good times!

Any suggestions for SUPER EASY yet somewhat healthy snacks to bring along? I was just going to get some pre-cut veggies and maybe some cheese or something along those lines. I am talking RIDICULOUSLY easy - pick it up at the supermarket and throw it on a platter easy. But it would be nice if it was something a little more creative than a veggie platter... unfortunately my brain is fried today from staring at excel for hours on end.

CD14

We are at that stage of my cycle that my friend/self-designated "conception coach" (she just wants to have a title), Katherine, calls POSITIVE OVULATION!! And yes, it has to be in all caps, with multiple exclamation points.

I was going to use OPKs this C, but then I sorta forgot. Or just didn't. Oops. No matter, we've been DTD every other day-ish until yesterday, when I decreed that we will now do it every day until Saturday, as I usually O around CD16 or 17. I have a feeling I'm going to be SORE. One day down, 5 to go; just thinking about it wears me out!

My New Year's resolution seems to be working so far, five whole days into 2010! The Wii has gotten some use, although I did slack last night. But for good reason - I was catching up with a friend on the phone until hubs got home, and then the two of us were out running errands until 8:30. I can already feel myself coming out of my fog a little. I'm making a point to think about things other than TTC, spending less time sitting on my butt, making a conscious effort to call up my friends and schedule time to see them, and doing things I actually enjoy (like making kitchen curtains!). I knew I was depressed, but now that I'm starting to see the light I realize that I miss my old self! I'm not unrealistic; I know it's not going to be easy to maintain a happier disposition, but it's like I finally have the desire and energy to try.

So tonight - no slacking allowed! I'm going to jump on the Wii Fit as soon as I get home and do at least 30 minutes of exercise. I wanna do the hula hoop one until I forget what it is I'm keeping my mind off of!

Hubs got us tickets to the Dodgers' playoff game tonight!!

I am so, so, SO EXCITED! I've never been to a playoff game before.

GO BLUE!!

Did I mention this means I'm leaving work early too? What a great day!

WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
