Almost perfect but not quite

I started writing a post the other day about how I've kicked out my inner Grinch and am actually, for the first time in three years, looking forward to Christmas. But then I never got around to posting it, which turned out to be a good thing because the shit hit the fan on Tuesday night and I remembered why the holidays suck so much.

Without going into the gruesome (and yet somehow also boring) details, I will just say that it's about the same thing it always is: Trying to schedule 4 family functions into one day while maintaining my sanity and maybe getting 5 minutes to do what I want to do, like spend a quiet moment alone with Hubs. I thought I had it all figured out, that this was going to be the year we finally had a stress-free Christmas! Oh how wrong I was.

I just wish our parents would try to understand that we do want to spend time with them at the holidays, but it's not always going to be the ideal situation because we get pulled and guilted from all sides every year.  Everyone wants a piece of us, and there just isn't enough to go around.  I'm trying my best to make everyone happy, but in the end it always ends up making me unhappy!

So Hubs and I are thinking about trying to move the trip to Hawaii we had planned for our 5th anniversary next year up to next Christmas instead.  Then even if I piss everyone else off, at least I'll be happy and relaxed!

There is good news about Christmas this year; the reason I was so excited about it is that it's the first year since we've been married that Hubs and I bought a lot of gifts for each other.  That sounds really materialistic, but I don't mean it to be.  It just doesn't seem like Christmas without a big pile of presents under the tree to wake up to, and we've never had that together.  But this year we will, and I am excited to share it with him.

Merry Christmas, ladies. I hope you all get exactly what you want this year, whatever it may be.

A Christmas in Hawaii sounds wonderful! I definitely think you should plan on this...

And lots of presents under the tree doesn't sound materialistic - it sounds quite lovely. Enjoy the moments you get with Hubs - sounds like they may be few and far between!!! Good luck with all the family this weekend. This is always a tough one in every family.

Merry Christmas!

Terry and I have discussed going away at Christmas for the same reasons.

I don't think its materialist at all to buy lots of presents. It sounds to me like you guys are in for a nice Christmas morning.

Oh my gosh we have had the same problem since dh and I were married in 2005. We don't live far away from all our parents and we spend most of Christmas day traveling back and forth from house to house. We spend maybe an hour or two at our own house. It's frustrating to say the least. Hope you have a great christmas despite the family stuff.

Sounds like a great plan! We took our vacation over Thanksgiving and it was wonderful to focus on just us!!!

Ooh, Hawaii! I wanna go! Mele Kalikimaka! I'm sorry you're being pulled in a hundred directions. Hope you and hubs find a few of those scattered precious moments alone that make Christmas special.

Yes go to Hawaii!! What a wonderful way to spend Christmas. Can you find other days or rotate holidays with certain family members? THat is what we do. It is just too much in one day.

Love your new look!!

Go to Hawaii!!! Definitely!

I hate an empty tree with no presents under it on Christmas morning - so sad. Hubby doesn't like gift-giving (lazy jerkface), so I have to force him into it and it really takes a lot of the fun out of it.

So a lot of gifts to open sounds quite awesome. Have a terrific day, family aside. ;)

With a hubby that doesn't really like Chrissie and no real extended family, travelling at Christmas would suit us down to the ground UNFORTUNATELY his job prevents it!

Enjoy all those pressies - Guv and I had one of "those" Chrissies last year and it was BRILLIANT!

~May your Christmas be filled with Peace~
